Although the city of Chesapeake is relatively new, having only been created in 1963 when the independent city of South Norfolk consolidated with now-defunct Norfolk County, its history dates back to the late 17th century. The Battle of Great Bridge, a critical early battle of the American Revolutionary War, took place on the Intracoastal Waterway that passes through what is now Chesapeake. It was as a result of this late 1775 battle that the Colony of Virginia shook itself free of English influence for good. Chesapeake was largely regarded as a bedroom community, with the majority of its residents working in neighboring Norfolk and Virginia Beach, until the late 1980s, when an influx of new industry saw the city grow in rapid fashion. Chesapeake is the hometown of a surprisingly large number of professional athletes past and present across numerous sports, including the NBA (Alonzo Mourning), NFL (DeAngelo Hall and Darryl Tapp), MLB (Michael Cuddyer and brothers B.J. & Justin Upton ) and NASCAR (Ricky Rudd). |

Chesapeake also is home to a significant portion of the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, the northernmost of the swamps along the southern Atlantic coast and one of the last large wild areas remaining in the eastern United States.
