Originally targeted as an area suitable for ship-building during the 15th Century, the site of Portsmouth has grown from a plantation to a town and then declared a city in 1858. According to the Portsmouth Department of Economic Development, "Olde Towne features one of the largest collections of historically significant homes between Alexandria, Virginia and Charleston, South Carolina." The department also references the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, noting that it's one of the oldest buildings in the city and was built by local slaves and free men.
A large amount of business for Portsmouth originates from its aquatic affiliation, but the historic districts also serve as a welcome draw for tourists. The city boasts its famous Seawall and wide selection of restaurants, as well as its historic offerings.
